OnePlus 5 Review

The long awaited OnePlus 5 is official! The announcement made a big noise, rightly so. With its new smartphone, OnePlus is moving up a gear. With a resolutely high-end design, the OnePlus 5 is also a concentrate of technology where power and autonomy mingle perfectly. The camera is not left behind with a dual sensor created in partnership with DxO Mark. All for a price of 499 euros. With OnePlus 5, OnePlus enters the giant's court.

This  was undoubtedly one of the most anticipated announcements of 2017. OnePlus jumps the number 4 that brings misfortune in China and launches the OnePlus 5. Once again, the manufacturer strikes a great blow. We have regained the excitement that followed the brand's first announcement with the OnePlus One.
At the time, the brand had upset the market by launching a smartphone worthy of the top of the range for a rate half as low. Subsequently, other brands were introduced. We think of Honor who has adopted the same strategy: Smart smartphones with neat design, performance worthy of the best market, for a very affordable price.
The OnePlus 2, OnePlus 3 and OnePlus 3T have not experienced the same hype as the very first model, even if they have managed to conquer the hearts of more and more users. With increasingly strong competition, the OnePlus 5 was expected at the turn. The manufacturer had to surprise in a market where the prices of high-end smartphones become indecent.
On paper, the OnePlus 5 has everything to make Apple, Samsung, Huawei, HTC, LG and others tremble. OnePlus offers a brand new design with an incomparable elegance and finesse, enough to make Apple jealous yet renowned for its know-how in the matter. Under the hood, power, a lot of power. The icing on the cake: a dual photo sensor created in partnership with DxO Mark makes its appearance. All this for a price of 499 euros, which is half the price of competing products. On paper it's all good.
But what about in practice? We had the chance to spend a week with the OnePlus 5 just before its official release. Here's what we think!

What's in the box ?

OnePlus gave us the chance to discover its OnePlus 5 in preview. The model in our possession is the 8 GB version of RAM with 128 GB of internal memory in matt black "Midnight Black". This version costs 559 euros. The model at 499 euros is exactly the same if not at the level of the color (one is entitled to the dark gray "Slate Gray"), the RAM (one is entitled to 6 GB) and the internal memory (64 GB). For the rest nothing changes.

The box of the OnePlus 5 is white and sober. Inside, a solid and red base supports the smartphone. The charging unit and the USB-Type-C charging cable are also lifted and uncovered, which is also red, the trademark of OnePlus. In our box, no headphones, probably because it is a press kit. In France, legislation requires that headphones be integrated into the box.

Design

At the front, we do not have a size / screen ratio comparable to that of a Galaxy S8 or LG G6. But is it really so important? The 2.5D display is impeccably integrated in the set with side edges that perfectly fit the design of the smartphone. At the top a black strip incorporates the photo sensor and the audio output dedicated to telephone conversations. On the lower band another black band with gray ceramic impression sensor. It is sober but terribly elegant.

On the upper slice there is nothing. On the lower slice are the USB Type-C port, the loudspeaker and the jack and a microphone. On the right slot is the on / off button and the slot for two nano SIM cards. No expansion via microSD card, but this is no surprise at OnePlus. On the left side you have the volume keys and the notification management key. You can choose to switch to ringing, silent or "do not disturb" mode.

If you look at the design of the OnePlus 5 is a pleasure for the eyes, it is once in hand that one notices the work accomplished by the mark. The curves are perfectly designed with very soft curves which to the touch are very pleasant. OnePlus has done a lot of work on the grip: the OnePlus 5 is very thin (7.2 mm) and yet it holds well in hand. A lot of work on the bevels was done. Besides, OnePlus camouflaged the antennas in these bevels to preserve a minimalist design, without false note.

In use, the Oneplus 5 offers a very good grip, even with one hand. It is relatively compact and lightweight. It will be noted only that the screen marks well the finger marks, which is not the case of the shell. For the moment, we were surprised by the absence of traces on the back.

Screen

This new step by OnePlus is also noticeable when you look at the OnePlus 5 screen. The brand has chosen a 5.5 inch format and opts for AMOLED technology. No borderless on all edges but the screen fits perfectly on the side edges.

The slab is protected by Corning Gorilla Glass 5 and adopts the 2.5D format (the edges are slightly curved to match the design of the device). For definition we are on Full HD or a resolution of 401 dpi. Some may regret the absence of QHD definition, to use it is not really known if there is a real more. But if one has to quibble a bit, one will mention this lack.

Performance

The Snapdragon 835 coupled with 8 GB of RAM does wonders. At no time does the OnePlus 5 sink, even when pushed into extremely greedy uses. One thinks for example the games with the advanced graphics and multitasking. At no time did OnePlus 5 show any signs of weakness. It turns at a bluffing speed as much as it is coupled to OxygenOS which is of a remarkable lightness.

The benchmarks speak for themselves. The OnePlus 5 delivers performance that is very close to the most powerful high-end models like the Galaxy S8 or the HTC U11. It is even fairly often better thanks to its 8GB of RAM. Some will say that it is too much, others will allow them to keep their OnePlus 5 several years.

Camera

With the OnePlus 5 you get a 16 megapixel Sony IMX 398 sensor with f / 1.7 aperture and EIS stabilization (software), and a 20 megapixel Sony IMX 350 sensor with f / 2.6 aperture. This combination allows OnePlus to play on the particular depth of field.

At the front, we have a 16 megapixel Sony IMX 371 sensor with f / 2.0 aperture, EIS stabilization and the ability to shoot videos in 1080p at 30 fps. On paper it is rather not bad. Has OnePlus succeeded in practicing a good forward on the picture side? The answer is yes !

The brand has listened to the feedback of the observers and users and has crossed an impressive cap on the side of the photo. The dual sensor of the OnePlus 5 makes it probably one of the best smartphones of the market side of the photo. The Galaxy S8 and HTC U11 are always ahead but the OnePlus 5 has absolutely no to blush for its performance on this side.
